About Us

Sounds and Surf is a collaborative ultrasound conference from the creators of The POCUS Atlas and Core Ultrasound. Our course is focused on providing essential point of care ultrasound education to acute care providers. We bring together experts in the field from across the country to deliver cutting edge talks while at the same time providing an engaging environment for networking and relationship building in the POCUS community.

 

Course Directors

Michael Macias, MD, FDP-AEMUS

Michael Macias completed his medical school and Emergency Medicine Residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He did his advanced emergency ultrasound fellowship at University of California, San Diego. Michael currently practices at Temecula Valley Hospital where he is the Clinical Ultrasound Director for all residency programs at UHS SoCal MEC. He also functions as the Associate Medical Director for the Emergency Department, and the Co-Fellowship Director for their Advanced Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Program. Administratively, he serves as the Global Clinical Ultrasound Director for a California-based group, where he manages clinical ultrasound programs at 20 different hospitals. Michael is an avid digital educator and has created multiple free open access medical education (FOAMed) sites, including EM Curious, The NUEM Blog, UCSD Ultrasound, and The POCUS Atlas. He shared the Innovation Award in 2018 from the ACEP Emergency Ultrasound Section for his work on The POCUS Atlas. Outside of digital education, Michael has a strong interest in design thinking, regional anesthesia, and emergency cardiology.

Jailyn Avila, MD, FDP-AEMUS

Jailyn Avila completed medical school in Loma Linda, California, residency in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and an ultrasound fellowship in Lexington, Kentucky.  During residency,  Jailyn and her then ultrasound director Ben Smith started working on and subsequently launched the website 5minsono.com, a website dedicated to ultrasound education that morphed into Core Ultrasound, an ultrasound education repository that includes short (and long) videos, a clip bank and courses. Jailyn is currently Core Faculty for the UHS SoCal MEC Emergency Medicine Residency in Temecula, California where she also functions as the Associate Ultrasound Director, the Director of Faculty Development, and the Co-Fellowship Director for their Advanced Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Program. Apart from her work on Core Ultrasound, she is a member of the Ultrasound GEL podcast (a podcast that discusses relevant ultrasound literature) and the director of the Ultrasound Leadership Academy and has and continues to collaborate with EMRAP.
